About Leopard Lily

History

Dieffenbachia Tropic Snow is a cultivar of Dieffenbachia, a genus of plants first defined by Henrich Heinrich Wilhelm Schott, director of the Botanical Gardens in Vienna, to honour gardener Joseph Dieffenbach (1796–1863).

Cultivation

Dieffenbachia are found naturally across the tropical Americas. They are herbaceous (no woody stem) and perennial plants (that live for more two years). In the wild, Dieffenbachia can grow up to three metres tall and a metre wide.

Care

Dieffenbachia seguine prefer light shade or indirect light in the summer and a slightly brighter position in the winter. From spring to autumn, they require watering only when the top few centimetres of their soil has dried out and even less in the winter. As a tropical plant, the Dieffenbachia enjoys humid climates and would suit a bathroom or kitchen. Regularly misting is another way to mimic its natural environment and keep it happy. Fast-growing plants, in the spring and summer, Dieffenbachia will also benefit from being fed once per month with liquid fertiliser.

Did you know?

Dieffenbachia seguine gets one of its common names, 'Dumb cane', due to the temporary speechlessness that can occur after ingesting the plant.

Toxicity

If ingested this plant can be toxic or poisonous so keep away from dogs, cats or other pets and small children.
