The Parlour Palm or Chamaedorea elegans is an elegant, low-maintenance and extremely popular houseplant. Parlour palms have lush, feathery green foliage that makes them one of the most attractive plants to look at. They are also air-purifying heavyweights and are pet and child-safe, so a great option for animal lovers.

About Parlour Palm

History

Parlour palms were very popular houseplants in the Victorian times. Wealthy families showcased their tropical palms and ferns, and Parlour palms were seen as an essential indoor plant to have in these collections.

Cultivation

The Parlour palm is a slow-growing houseplant, so slow that it will take several years for a 15-centimetre seedling to grow to 45 centimetres tall. In its native habitat of Mexico's forests and lowlands, it grows under the tree canopy.

Care

Parlour palms are easy-going plants and will thrive in bright but indirect light, warmth and humidity (like the Mexican jungle). They can cope with lower temperatures and drier air.

Did you know?

Parlour palm fronds are used around the world in the floral industry, particularly as funeral flowers. The fronds can last up to 40 days after being cut.

Toxicity

This plant is non-toxic so although not advised should pose no harm if accidentally chewed or eaten by your furry friends.
