Phormium tricolour
New Zealand Flax
Phormium ‘Gold Ray' is a large palm-like evergreen perennial with long narrow leaves. The sword-shaped leaves are striped with grey-green stripes with yellow margins that are often tinged orange. Spike-like flowers appear on mature plants in the summer.
Height is measured from the bottom of the plastic nursery pot (please allow a +/-10% variance). Diameter is the nursery pot diameter, so to get a pot that fits, the pot diameter should be bigger.

Keep me in fertile well-drained soil in full sun. Though I am hardy, I will need protection from cold temperatures.
Water me regularly to keep my soil moist but take care not to over-water me.
I am a sun-lover but I can also grow well in partial shade.
l love well-draining and moisture-retentive soil. In a pot I am most comfortable in a soil-based compost.
About New Zealand Flax
Phormium ‘Gold Ray’ is part of the plant family Asphodelaceae and is native to New Zealand. In ancient times the Maori used the fibres of Phormium in weaving rope and sail making.
More recently, the Phormium and its varieties have been widely cultivated as ornamental garden plants. Because of its architectural nature, it is often used as a focal point of a garden.
Phormium ‘Gold Ray’ is easy to grow, and whilst it will thrive in full sun it can also handle some shade. It likes to be kept well-watered, especially when establishing in the ground. It is a hungry plant so feed it with a slow-release fertiliser in spring and summer.
The leaves were and still are used as a decorative and structural element panelling found within meeting houses.
