About Canary Island Date Palm

History

The Canary Island date palm is part of the Arecaceae palm family and is native to the Canary Islands. In the Canary Islands, the leaves are used to make brooms, baskets and hats, to brooms.

Cultivation

The Canary Islands date palm is cultivated mainly as an ornamental plant that adds a tropical flavour to any garden. It is hardy to -8°C so makes a great garden plant. It will need protection if temperatures drop below. In the Canary Islands, the sap is used to make palm syrup. It is most commonly used to add a tropical feel or structure to a planting scheme.

Care

Phoenix canariensis likes to be in bright sun but not direct sunlight. Water sparingly and bring outside in the summer if growing as a houseplant. It can withstand some cold but not frost.

Did you know?

The Royal Horticultural Society has given Phoenix canariensis the award of Garden Merit (AGM). It is the national emblem of the Canary Islands.
