Chamaerops humilis is also known as the Mediterranean Fan Palm. It is a bushy evergreen palm that is normally found in the tropics. It is the only palm native to Europe and because of its hardiness, it grows well as an outdoor plant in the UK.

About Mediterranean Fan Palm

History

The Mediterranean fan palm is part of the Arecaceae plant family and is one of only two palm species native to Europe, found growing wild in Portugal and Spain. As it is frost-hardy, it is particularly suited to the climate in the UK. It is ecologically important in preventing soil erosion in the wild and in providing food and shelter to many animals.

Cultivation

As it is frost-hardy the Mediterranean fan palm is particularly suited to the climate in the UK. It adds structure and a tropical feel to any planting scheme. In a garden, it is often planted as a focal point. Whether grown as a houseplant or garden plant it requires bright conditions and moderate watering.

Care

Chamaerops humilis likes to bask in the sun for most of the day but is also happy in light shade. It should be watered moderately and planted in well-drained soil.

In Spain, the Eurasian badger is the main spreader of the seeds. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
