The Heavenly Bamboo is an evergreen, compact shrub grown for its foliage, which provides all-year-round interest. Its bold, bright red leaves turn green as the plant matures and then turning red again as autumn takes hold. In July it blossoms white flowers that are followed by red berries. This ever-changing plant will add interest to any outdoor space, but be careful around your furry friends as its berries are toxic to animals.

About Heavenly Bamboo

History

Nandina domestica ‘Obsessed’ is part of the Berberidaceae plant family and is native to eastern Asia. Over 65 cultivars have been identified in Japan, where Nandina is very popular. It has been grown in Japanese and Chinese gardens for centuries and was introduced to western gardens in 1804.

Cultivation

Heavenly Bamboo is widely cultivated for use as an ornamental or hedge plant. It is also used for containers or window box planting schemes.

Care

Nandina domestica likes to be in a sunny and sheltered spot in moist and well-drained soil. Trim untidy stems in spring and feed me in the warmer months with a slow-release fertiliser. I grow best in slightly acidic and well-draining soil.
