How To Turn Your Home Into A Jungle With Trailing Plants

Written by James, Plant Lover

Plants are good for us. Basking amongst greenery can reduce our stress levels and boost our creativity. And some plants even have the power to clear the air of pollutants (if there are enough of them in one room). So why not bring the outdoors in? The urban jungle is truly one of the greatest trends in modern interior design–and it says a lot about our human desire to feel connected with nature. So if you’re into all things green and natural, turning your space into a jungle oasis could be the right move for you.

Trailing plants to create an urban jungle paradise

Trailing plants are one of the best additions to a home jungle. They can hang from the ceiling, sit on a shelf, or cascade down from tall furniture, leaving you more floor space to work with. They also add depth, height and interest to a room. So if you don’t already have a few shelves up in your home, consider adding some natural wooden ones to create the perfect Pinterest indoor oasis. Ideally, you want the shelves to blend with the wall, so your plants and their beautiful foliage can be the centre of attention. Wooden surfaces, bamboo, and terracotta pots also work well within a jungle theme. You basically want everything to look effortless, a little messy, but still chic.

There are no strict rules when it comes to curating an urban jungle. The main thing to focus on is accumulating as many plants as possible to scatter around your home. Luckily, there’s a plant to suit every room, from humid bathrooms to light-deprived hallways.

Golden pothos

The golden pothos is the plant for you if you tend to make leaves wilt just by looking at them. It's truly unkillable (please, don't take that as a challenge), meaning it's very forgiving if you occasionally forget about it. This plant is also easy to propagate, so you can transform your home into a tropical paradise on a budget.

Heartleaf Philodendron Hanging 1

Heart-leaf philodendron

This philodendron’s heart-shaped leaves are too charming not to have in your jungle (and wouldn’t they make such a cute Valentine’s or anniversary gift instead of flowers?). It’s both low maintenance and easy to propagate, so you can keep adding to your heart-leaf philodendron collection for free. Philodendrons thrive in warm and bright conditions; however, they’re tolerant to some shade. As a tropical plant, it loves humidity–so either put it near a humidifier, in a bathroom or mist regularly.

Satin pothos

The satin pothos' unique patterned leaves will jazz up any room in your home. As with all pothos plants, this trailing vine is perfect for beginners and can adapt to various light conditions, which is great because not all of us are lucky enough to have south-facing windows! However, if you can place this plant in a bright and humid spot, such as a sunny bathroom, it will reward you with fast, healthy growth.

English Ivy Variegated 1

English ivy

Chances are, you've already got English ivy climbing up the exterior of your house or garden fence. This plant is an expert climber and can be found clinging to or winding around trees and other surfaces (but it works perfectly as a hanging plant, too). It's brilliant at purifying the air and is super affordable, making it a great plant to use throughout your indoor jungle. And just like a true Brit, English ivy thrives in cool, rainy, shady spots, so be sure to water it thoroughly.

Mistletoe Cactus 1

Mistletoe cactus

The mistletoe cactus is a tropical trailing plant with unique stems that somewhat resemble runner beans. Unlike desert cacti, this cactus doesn't need direct light and strong heat; it's actually sensitive to too much sun. Therefore, it’s best kept in a spot with bright indirect light and high humidity. The mistletoe cactus is yet another plant that's a breeze to look after, especially if you keep it in your bathroom, where it will naturally receive humidity.

Fishbone Cactus 4

Fishbone cactus

The fishbone cactus gets its name from the strange-looking leaves that morbidly resemble a fishbone (we kind of think it looks like seaweed, so we'll go with that instead). This intriguing plant will no doubt be the focus of attention in your jungle theme, as the light green foliage looks like it was plucked straight from a children's doodle. Like the mistletoe cactus, the fishbone doesn't need lots of direct sunlight–this jungle cactus will do just fine in indirect light with some warmth and humidity.
