How to keep dried flowers fresh - everything you need to know

Dried flowers are freshly cut flowers that have had the moisture taken out of them. The process usually involves hanging the flowers upside down in a warm space to allow them to slowly and naturally dehydrate. The resulting flowers are extremely low maintenance while still capturing the beauty of nature and can look fantastic in any room of the home, an office or reception area.

It is important to be aware that dried flowers will look different to fresh flowers, and that their appearance may change over time. However, by following our dried flower care guide it is easy to prolong the life of a dried flower bouquet.

Easy dried flower care tips

Don’t add water!

While we all know that it’s important to provide our fresh flower bouquets with plenty of water, the last thing we want to do is rehydrate a dehydrated bouquet! Dried blooms have had the water purposefully removed from them, and as a result the stems are going to be weaker and more brittle. Adding water will weaken the stems and eventually cause mould. A warm, dry environment is what your flowers need.

Keep them away from window sills

Dried flowers will fade much faster if exposed to direct sunlight. While all dried flowers will naturally fade over time, if you want to keep their colour for as long as possible, don’t put them on windowsills or near windows where the sun rays could speed up the process.

Make sure it's away from the hustle and bustle of your daily life

Take care

Dried flowers are more brittle than freshly cut ones. They are more susceptible to breakages, and this only increases as they age. You might see some petals drop from the flowers over time but you can always collect these and keep them to create potpourri, especially if you have chosen a strongly scented flower such as lavender. Because dried flowers are more fragile, a quieter place is also best. Choose a spot for them and then try not to love them too often, and make sure it's away from the hustle and bustle of your daily life to minimise the chase of them being knocked over.

Keep them away from kids and pets

Dried flowers are charming and beautiful, however this can make them attractive to curious hands and may be mistaken as a tasty snack by your furry friends. It would be best to keep them out of reach of children and any pets to keep them looking their best for as long as possible.

Keep it airy

Dried flowers can be a little sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Placing them in a room where there is good airflow can be advantageous. Anywhere stuffy or damp might affect the flowers, as if they become moist, mould can occur. Checking your stems frequently can help ensure no moisture is getting trapped in the vase and that they remain dry.
