Spathiphyllum Plant Care

Learn All About Spathiphyllum Care with our Guide

Spathiphyllum are tropical evergreens with beautiful leaf-shaped flowers that can sometimes bloom twice in a year. Spathiphyllum are ideal houseplants as they can survive without large amounts of light or water.

Caring for your Spathiphyllum

Spathiphyllum Sunlight

The Spathiphyllum originates from the jungle floor and is adapted to indirect or dappled sunlight. Too much direct sunlight can cause your Spathiphyllum leaves to fade or burn but it does like to receive plenty of light, so aim for a spot near a window that is sheltered from direct sunlight.

Soil & Nutrients

Spathiphyllum needs nutrient-rich soil with good drainage. A peat-based potting mix is recommended but you can use any quick-draining potting soil. Use a half-strength liquid fertiliser once a week or each time you water during the growing season (May to August).

Water

The Spathiphyllum likes moist soil, but make sure it doesn’t sit in standing water and allow the top of the soil to dry between watering. Reduce watering in the winter months.

Climate & Humidity

Due to their tropical origins, Spathiphyllum like warm and humid conditions and are well suited to a bathroom or kitchen. Avoid exposing your Spathiphyllum to cold or dry conditions and consider increasing humidity by misting your plant every day, especially if you are using heating or air conditioning.

Maintenance

Aside from keeping your Spathiphyllum in the optimum growing conditions, it will be pretty low maintenance. Spathiphyllum are happy being a little pot-bound so don’t worry about repotting too often. To encourage flowers it is important to give the plant consistent food, light and humidity.
