Chamaedorea Plant Care

Learn All About Chamaedorea Care with our Guide

The Chamaedorea is native to Southern Mexico and Guatemala where it grows on the rainforest floor. Although it prefers a warm and humid environment, parlour palm’s tolerance to cooler and drier conditions helped it to become a popular houseplant in Victorian times.

Caring for your Chamaedorea

Chamaedorea Sunlight

The Chamaedorea is known as a low-light plant but will do best if it receives plenty of indirect sunlight. Aim for a north-facing window that is sheltered from direct sun. Too much direct sunlight can cause your palms leaves to scorch.

Chamaedorea Soil & Nutrients

Chamaedorea will be happy in any good quality potting mix, but a peat-free mix is recommended. Use a half strength liquid fertiliser every second month during the growing season (May to August).

Chamaedorea Water

Chamaedorea like a moderate amount of water and are susceptible to overwatering. In the spring and summer wait until the top few centimetres of soil are dry before watering, and reduce watering in the autumn and winter. Yellowing leaves suggest the plant isn’t getting enough water.

Chamaedorea Climate & Humidity

As Chamaedorea are native to the rainforest, it is no surprise that they prefer warm and humid conditions. However, they are tolerant to most household environments. If your palm has brown tips, try moving the plant away from any draughts and misting it to increase humidity.

Chamaedorea Maintenance

Chamaedorea are pretty low maintenance once they are established and have small root systems that grow slowly so won’t need repotting for several years. Keep the leaves clean of dust by wiping them with a damp cloth and prune any yellow or dead fronds.
