Dracaena plants can vary in size, shape, and colour, but all types share one striking characteristic; their long leaves grow outward and up from a central stalk or cane. The canes are thick and sturdy, making these plants a brilliant example of nature's genius.
As a dracaena plant grows, it maintains its tall shape, meaning the leaves grow upward. This makes these plants perfect for narrow corners and blank spaces.
Native to tropical Africa, dracaena plants are fairly low-maintenance and love humid conditions that mimic their origins. Placing your dracaena plant in kitchens and bathrooms can be the best way to help your plant thrive in your home.

Different Types of Dracaena Plants
The popular dracaenas plants actually include several species within the dracaena genus. At The Stem, our range includes the dracaena fragrans (commonly known as the corn plant) and the dracaena marginata (also known as the dragon tree).
The dracaena fragrans (fragrant dracaena, corn plant) is a tropical-looking plant that has waxy green foliage and a thick woody stem. This plant can grow as much as 6 feet in height when grown as a potted plant.
The dracaena marginata (or commonly known as dragon tree) houseplant is a unique indoor tree with green and red-hued sword-like leaves that fan out from its long stems. This spiky tree is fuss-free and striking, making it a great indoor plant for your home, even if you are a newbie at caring for indoor plants.
Caring for Your Dracaena Plant
Your dracaena plant will need a little TLC now and then, however, once you master the lighting and watering needs of your new plant, it will be destined to thrive. Sunlight is a must for a dracaena plant, they love lapping up the sun when positioned near a window. Be careful to not overwater this type of plant as they are susceptible to root rot, they only need watering once the top few centimetres of the soil dries out. Ensure your dracaena is placed in well-draining soil and look out for loss of leaves as this can be a sign of too much water.
