Araucaria heterophylla, more commonly known as Norfolk Island Pine, is a beautiful indoor conifer. A popular addition to houseplant collections during the festive period due to its Christmas Tree like structure. An architectural statement plant with small needles forming fan-like branches, this is an ideal eco alternative to a traditional cut Christmas Tree that can be kept as a houseplant year-round.

About Norfolk Island Pine Christmas Tree

History

Araucaria heterophylla is only native to one island, Norfolk Island between Australia and New Zealand. Unlike most houseplants and Christmas Trees, the Norfolk Island Pine has tough foliage, meaning it can be touched without really damaging it. The needles are soft and gently rubbing them will release a light pine scent.

Cultivation

Contrary to its name, look and scent, it is not a Pine but a member of the Araucariaceae family. In the wild, they can grow up to 60m in height.

Care

Norfolk Island Pine prefers a humid environment, away from strong heat sources. Mist them with room temp water or use a humidifier. They prefer the soil to be kept moist, if the needles start to yellow this could be a sign of underwatering.

Did you know?

When James Cook first arrived at the Norfolk Islands, he unsuccessfully tried to use Norfolk Island Pines as ship masts.

Toxicity

If ingested this plant can be toxic or poisonous so keep away from dogs, cats or other pets and small children.
